Privacy and your data

Caliu is local-first by design, and that shapes how your data is handled.

Where your notes live

Your notes are stored on your device: in your browser's local database for the web app, and in a local database for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps. That is why Caliu opens instantly and works fully offline.

When you are online, your notes sync to Caliu's servers so they can follow you across devices. The backend runs on Cloudflare's infrastructure, which stores your notes, tags, and attachments for syncing and for features like public share links and reminders.

Your data is never locked in

Notes are plain Markdown underneath, and you can take everything out whenever you like:

  • Export a single note from its actions menu, in Markdown, plain text, HTML, or RTF (the iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps add PDF).
  • Select many notes and export them all at once as a ZIP of individual files.

See the export article for the details.

The fine print

The full picture of what is collected and how it is used lives in the privacy policy. If anything is unclear, or you have a request about your data, write to hola@caliuapp.com.
