Using Caliu without an account

You can use Caliu without creating an account. Open the app, finish the short welcome tour, and start writing. Your notes are saved on your device, work fully offline, and belong to you.

What "on this device only" means

Without an account there is no server copy: notes live only on the device you wrote them on. Everything else works normally, including tags, search, folders, the editor, and images and files you attach.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • If you lose the device, or uninstall the app, or clear the browser's site data, those notes are gone. There is no copy anywhere else to restore from.
  • Your other devices cannot see them, because there is nothing to sync.

The sync row in Settings shows Not syncing so you always know where your notes live.

What needs an account

A few features talk to Caliu's servers, so they wait until you sign in. They stay visible, and using one offers to sign you in:

  • Share links, because the link has to be served to whoever you send it to.
  • Reminders, because the notification is delivered from the server.
  • Version history, because past versions are kept on the server.
  • Importing notes from another app.

Everything else, writing, tags, search, attachments, export, and the Mac notes folder, works with no account at all.

Signing in

Sync is not a setting to switch on. Having an account means your notes sync; not having one means they do not. So when you want your notes on more than one device, sign in.

You can sign in from the welcome tour, from the sync row in Settings, or from any of the features above. Create an account with an email and password, or use Sign in with Apple or Google.

The notes already on this device come with you: they are added to the account you sign in to, tags and all. If you would rather start clean, Caliu offers to delete them instead, and always asks first.

Already have an account?

Sign in to it and this device joins the notes you already have. On the welcome screen choose Sign in or create account, or open Settings and use the sync row.

If you wrote notes on this device before signing in, Caliu asks what should happen to them: keep them, and they are added to that account, or delete them from this device.
