Local files on Mac

Caliu can mirror your library to a folder on your Mac, so every note also exists as a plain .md file you can open in Finder, Obsidian, or any other editor.

Setting it up

Open Settings, go to Your notes, then Notes Folder, and choose a folder. Caliu writes every note there right away and keeps it in sync with your account from then on, in both directions.

What is in the folder

  • Active notes sit at the root of the folder, in whatever subfolders you organize them into.
  • Archived notes live in an Archive folder.
  • Trashed notes live in a hidden .trash folder.
  • Images and other attachments live in an attachments folder, so the note files stay portable on their own.

Each file keeps a small block of Caliu metadata at the top so the note is recognized even if you rename the file or move it between folders.

Editing outside Caliu

Because the files are plain markdown, edits made by any other app, or even by an AI agent working on the folder, sync straight back into Caliu automatically. Moving a note's file into Archive or .trash archives or trashes it, and moving it back out restores it.

If the same note changes on both sides before Caliu can reconcile them, the version on disk wins and your other edit is saved separately as a (conflicted copy) file, so nothing is lost.

What is not mirrored

Encrypted notes are never written to the folder.

If something looks off

Settings shows a warning if something needs your attention:

  • Folder unavailable: "Caliu can no longer access this folder. Choose it again to continue."
  • Not yet linked: "This folder is not linked to this account yet. Choose it to confirm and start mirroring."
  • Paused deletions: "Caliu paused file deletions because many files disappeared at once. Review the folder, then choose it again to continue."

This is a safety rail: a moved or renamed folder can never wipe out your notes.

Disconnecting

Choosing Disconnect in Settings stops the mirroring. The files stay exactly where they are; Caliu just stops watching and writing to them.

Availability

Local files are available on Mac today. iPhone and iPad are not supported yet.
